Elisha Makes One Final Prophecy

13:14 Now Elisha had a terminal illness. ¹  King Joash of Israel went down to visit him. ²  He wept before him and said, “My father, my father! The chariot ³  and horsemen of Israel!” ⁴

14:11 But Amaziah would not heed the warning, ⁵  so King Jehoash of Israel attacked. ⁶  He and King Amaziah of Judah met face to face ⁷  in Beth Shemesh of Judah.

19:31 For a remnant will leave Jerusalem;

survivors will come out of Mount Zion.

The intense devotion of the sovereign Lord ⁸  to his people ⁹  will accomplish this.

24:16 The king of Babylon deported to Babylon all the soldiers (there were 7,000), as well as 1,000 craftsmen and metal workers. This included all the best warriors. ¹⁰ 

[13:14]  ¹ tn Heb “Now Elisha was ill with the illness by which he would die.”

[13:14]  ² tn Heb “went down to him.”

[13:14]  ³ tn Though the noun is singular here, it may be collective, in which case it could be translated “chariots.”

[13:14]  ⁴ sn By comparing Elisha to a one-man army, the king emphasizes the power of the prophetic word. See the note at 2:12.

[14:11]  ⁵ tn Heb “did not listen.”

[14:11]  ⁶ tn Heb “went up.”

[14:11]  ⁷ tn Heb “looked at each other [in the] face.”

[19:31]  ⁸ tn Traditionally “the Lord of hosts.”

[19:31]  ⁹ tn Heb “the zeal of the Lord.” In this context the Lord’s “zeal” refers to his intense devotion to and love for his people which prompts him to protect and restore them. The Qere, along with many medieval Hebrew mss and the ancient versions, has “the zeal of the LORD of hosts” rather than “the zeal of the LORD” (Kethib). The translation follows the Qere here.
